Investment of USD $50 million in Circular Economy and improvement of Plastics Recycling in Asia

ALBA Group Asia and Wah Hua Pte Ltd to collaborate and enhance regional capacity in sustainability

Singapore, 13 November 2022 – At the Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business in Singapore, Dr. Axel Schweitzer, Chairman and Owner of ALBA Group Asia (AGA), and Mr. Desmond Tan, Chief Operating Officer of Wah & Hua Pte Ltd (W&H), signed a Letter of Intent to promote circular economy and improve plastics recycling in Asia. The signing was officially witnessed by Dr. Robert Habeck, German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

As part of the commitment, AGA and W&H will be investing over USD$50 million, over the next five years, into concrete projects like:

• Creating a PET circular value chain in Indonesia (TRIDI), Thailand, and Vietnam by building or supporting state-of-the-art recycling facilities to produce food-grade quality r-PET

• Introducing smart digital collection systems in existing waste management operations to enable full traceability of the plastics value chain, allowing for certification of the quality of recovered material and creation of plastic credits

• Working together to educate and empower the informal sector, thus creating added value for society and the community

• Developing systems to recover plastics for chemical recycling, generating circular solutions for low-quality and low-value plastics

Dr. Robert Habeck stated regarding the conference, “Two topics which will play a key role in the coming years: Diversification and Sustainability. In this context, the Indo-Pacific region is a very important partner for us.”

Dr. Schweitzer has been developing bridging activities between Europe and Asia for years, pursuing the vision of a world without waste. Regarding the new partnership, he explains: “Based on our longstanding work on establishing sustainable waste management and treatment systems in Asia, we strongly support the negotiations that are currently underway for a legally binding UN International Plastics Convention to end plastic pollution of the environment and oceans. We believe we can do our part to bring them to life. As Deputy Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business, I’m honoured that we had the chance to sign our Letter of Intent in the presence of Federal Minister Dr. Habeck at this important conference, which aims to build and strengthen personal and economic ties between Europe and Asia.”

“We have a long-lasting and strong partnership with ALBA Group Asia. It enables us to address Singapore’s environmental challenges by using modern methods for sustainable waste management. The expanded cooperation opens new opportunities for both companies to expand our established and existing circular solutions to new countries for healthier lives, a cleaner environment, and economic prosperity in more Asian countries,” says Desmond Tan.
